The Use of Persuasion During the Mock Trial
During the mock trial, the defense
used Ethos to defend Sandy Townsend.
Sandy Townsend stated and was nominated for an award because of her
kindness. Sandy gave one of her
defending witness during the court hearing (Jean Wade) a discount on her
apartment as her landlord because Sandy understood her situation and didn't
want to see her in the streets. She often gave out free food to the homeless
who wandered around her café, although she also admits that she wants her
business to be successful so she prefers the homeless away her area.
Pathos was also used by the
prosecuting attorney. When Sandy
Townsend changed her story with the detective once Teresa’s body was discovered
in her dumpster at her café. Sandy admitted that she was shocked knowing that
she was just talking to Teresa, that caused her to be in awe and not able to
think clearly of what was happening around her.
Logos was used during the hearing when
Pat Gonzalez (Defensive Witness) of the meat company said that when he received
the check for the meat and left through the back door, there were also some
teenagers hanging out at the back of the ally. When the jury considered Sandy
Townsend’s innocence, I think the jury took into consideration the reasons that
there were other people in the alley. If Sandy would have done anything, the
teenagers would have seen her and she would have been a mess once she came back
to give Pat the check vs. when Micki stated that all she heard was yelling.
