Texting While Driving is Dangerous, right?

With today’s society always on the go, cell phones have become a necessity for communication. We use them for business calls, family conversations, and even for social media. The cell phone of today is more of a personal computer then just a phone. You can make calls, text, take pictures, play games, watch movies, check social media, or just surf the web. Cell phones are wonderful communication tools, but a deadly distraction while driving.

Texting while driving has become such a driving hazard that many states are making it illegal. According to the Don’t Text and Drive website, individuals who drive while sending or reading text messages are 23% more likely to be involved in a car crash than other drivers. A crash typically happens within an average of three seconds after a driver is distracted (donttextdrive.com, 2011). At 55 mph, it only takes five seconds for a vehicle to cover the distance of a football field. Nobody would think that closing your eyes for 3 to 5 seconds repeatedly while driving is a safe practice, so why would they think that texting and driving is a good idea? Drivers need to put their phones away when driving; there is no conversation in the world that is more important than a human life. Let’s all do our part to keep our roads safe by not texting and driving!
