Sexual Assault on Campus
The subject of sexual assault has
increased dramatically in recent studies. Studies show that at least 30% of
sexual assault cases aren’t being reported. Senator Gillibrand in the
Dockterman’s (2015) Time magazine
article is calling “sexual assault on campus an epidemic” (p. 1). There are
currently over 100 universities under investigation for the possibility of
violating federal laws that are there to keep college students safe. The White
House in fact has been threatening universities and colleges with sanctions for
not following guidelines.
It is actually no surprise that
when a sexual assault is reported, the university will simply not do anything
about in fear that it might make headlines and/or bring a bad name to their
school. Freshman and sophomore students are at greater risk for sexual assault
or attempted sexual assault. Roughly, 80% of all incidents the offender is
known by the victim (Dockterman, 2015). Now more and more women are speaking up
on campus; reporting it to law enforcement. Many are no longer letting the
subject go and are instead doing something about the issue.
